Since these pages are dedicated to "Wolfhounds" I thought it might be good to share some basic facts. For if we are breeding wolfhounds we should be familiar with what our dogs prey is capable of.
For instance did you know...
***Wolves can go over a 10-foot fence and bite through 11 gauge steel fabric
***Wolves have 1500 lbs. psi between their jaws
***Wolves hunt by
"coursing" rather than stalking as big cats do. Wolves rarely attack
from behind. They run around to the front of their prey and bite into their nose
or throat and
hang on with powerful canines until the animals goes down -
sometimes this may take as long as five full minutes.
***Wolves only get one in
nine prey.
In the wild they will only live for seven or eight years.
***Wolves can travel from 50
to 125 miles a day - they can trot at speeds
of 10 miles an hour indefinitely and display bursts of speed up to 45 miles
an hour when hunting
I find this last fact the most fascinating. We had better be breeding dogs that are athletic as well as big, otherwise we should probably change their name.
